Project N95 began in early 2020 as a volunteer effort to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to U.S. healthcare providers in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. One year later, Project N95 has expanded its reach to a national network and a larger mission of equitable access to PPE and COVID-19 testing supplies. This growth requires strict data security standards to protect the information Project N95 receives from their clients in the healthcare space. Nightfall helps the Project N95 infosec team secure data across their cloud systems.

Security solutions for a rapid response organization

Stewart Ellis leads the technical support team at Project N95. He manages the platforms and applications the company uses internally to support the mission of providing equitable access to COVID-19 PPE and COVID-19 testing supplies to their customers. To expand access to these critical resources, Project N95 must collect and manage sensitive data and meet compliance standards for all platforms that could receive or store this data.

The main challenge for Stewart’s team comes from the nature of the organization — Project N95 began as an all-volunteer program and has expanded into a mostly volunteer-run organization. Onboarding and offboarding volunteers and staff happens quickly to keep up with the challenges and demands of their mission, so their data security policies must be flexible to fit the team’s needs. “We have to make sure that the information provided by our customers as part of our mission is protected, as well as our proprietary information related to Project N95,” says Stewart.

Goals for growth require protecting patient health information (PHI)

Protecting the data is just one requirement for Project N95. Stewart and other leaders at the organization like Chief of Staff John Click work to ensure data security through education and collaboration among volunteers and staff. Nightfall DLP was the right fit for Project N95 because of our easy and fast integration with SaaS platforms, and our solution provides real-time notification and remediation options within Slack. “With Nightfall, we have the ability to educate our volunteers on the protocols we need to implement and follow,” says Stewart.

Transparency and accountability are key values for Project N95, from the start through to their growth ahead. Each opportunity to add a new vendor or healthcare organization as a Project N95 customer requires adhering to compliance standards and protecting data moving around their cloud systems.

“Working with Nightfall allows us to provide a lot more certainty and stability to new suppliers who operate at large volumes with higher liability and risk portfolios,” says John. “Nightfall provides expanded transparency for us with the ability to build reports in our dashboard. We provide certainty to our stakeholders through the use of DLP.”

Matching priorities for mission-driven work

Adding DLP to Project N95’s cybersecurity framework enables scalability to expand the volunteer infrastructure and carry out the mission to expand PPE access and COVID-19 testing supplies to more healthcare providers in need.

“We can’t solve this problem if we don’t help communities that are most acutely impacted by the pandemic,” says John. “When we work with a technology partner that provides in kind support like Nightfall, we view that as a direct amplification of our mission.”

“For us, DLP is not just a line item or transactional. It’s a direct connection to the mission of our project. We see Nightfall contributing to our ambitious goals and business objectives.”
